What is a Neuropsychological Assessment?

Neuropsychological assessments are completed for adults when an individual may have attention deficits or other brain based struggles such as memory issues or neurodegenerative diseases such as dementia. Often individuals are referred by their physician, but a referral is not needed to make an appointment.

The focus of neuropsychological testing is to determine how the brain is functioning. Tests are completed proactively or as a preventative measure. We offer baseline cognitive assessments for individuals with no deficits but would like to track their intellectual functioning on a yearly basis for early signs of cognitive disease. Neuropsychological testing is also completed for individuals who have brain based difficulties such as inattention, memory or word finding difficulties, or impairments as a result of medical illnesses, or traumatic brain injuries.

The process of neuropsychological testing

A neuropsychological evaluation includes an interview with the psychologist and a comprehensive battery of standardized tests which include measures of intellectual functioning as well as assessment of mood, attention, behavior, and memory.

The testing includes assessments in the following areas:

  • Baseline cognitive functioning
  • Dementia assessments for conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease
  • Cognitive disorder in psychiatric conditions, such as depression
  • Cognitive changes following a medical illness (e.g., cardiac issues, stroke)
  • Language disturbance
  • Memory evaluations related to mild cognitive impairment, dementia, or normal aging
  • Traumatic brain injury
